WOW!! What creativity!!!

Such AN AMAZING COLLECTION of pumpkins arrived at Room 108 this morning.   The kids had such a great time sharing their pumpkins and admiring the work of their friends.  Our collection of pumpkins is out in the hall so all the classes can enjoy all the hard work that our students put into their projects.  Have fun looking at all the creativity!   Thank you for helping with this project!

It's Almost Halloween!

Oh my...what a beautiful day!  It took me awhile to get back in from outside and get to work.   It was so nice!

It was so great visiting with all of you last week.  I love talking about your great kids.  Please don't ever feel you have to wait for a scheduled conference time if you have any questions or concerns, just shoot me an email!  Of course, if I don't return your email quickly....use my personal email address as we still seem to have some issues getting emails through the server.

A couple great questions came up during conferences.   Here is a bit of Q and A...

Q.  Can the books on Raz Kids or Big Universe count toward the 100 books?
Definitely!  Both those sites are GREAT resources for books that are appropriate for your child's reading level.

Q. Are the kids dressing up for Halloween?
No, we are not dressing it up.   You can definitely go a little orange and black crazy....:) but no costumes.  We'll have a little treat and maybe read some special books throughout the day but we'll keep it low-key.

Q.  When is the pumpkin book project due?
Yikes!  That would be tomorrow (October 31).   I can't wait to see the creativity!   I hope you enjoyed the project.

Q.  When will you start Science in first grade?
We will begin Science with Mrs. Rex at the beginning of the second trimester (in December).

We really enjoyed learning all about spiders!   I will put some spider books on Big Universe for your kids to share with you.   Remember it's http://www.biguniverse.com/.   The username is your child's first name, the password is northstar, and the group username is carconjam.

Some of the kids are working hard on the "Husky Challenge" and October Choice Homework.   I wanted to share some of the great acrostic poems that some of our smart kids wrote!!

Here is a scarecrow acrostic poem by Disha:

Stuffed with hay,
Crows get scared,
Alone in the fields,
Ready to guard
Everyday.
Clothes to disguise,
Rags on him,
Out stands on the field,
Watching his fields.

Here is an October acrostic poem by Samay:

October is when we have Halloween.
Carve pumpkins.
Trick or treating is fun.
Off we go to the pumpkin patch.
Boo!
Enjoy the candy.
Ready to dress up.

Remember that homework is found on the portal...or will be as soon as I get it up...:)   The must-dos are always:
*Mad Minute Practice
*Work on the 100 Book Challenge
*Spelling Practice
*DIBS Math Practice
*Sunshine Math

The May-Dos can be found on the portal:
*Choice Homework
*Husky Challenge

Have a great week!   I will try to post pictures of the pumpkin characters tomorrow!   How fun!

Some News From Room 108

Hey Fabulous Families!

I can't believe it's Sunday already.  This weekend flew by...could it be the BEAUTIFUL weather?   I definitely wanted to spend as much time outside as possible because I have a feeling this beautiful weather is coming to a close.

Next week is conference week.  It is one of my favorite weeks of the year!  I love spending time talking about these awesome kids!    It's a busy week, that's for sure, but I believe it's time well-spent.   We do only have 15 minutes to talk so we need to be organized and focused.  I will be sharing with you what I have found out about your child and then we will discuss goals for your child.   If you have a goal or goals in mind when you come to the conference that would be GREAT!   That will help us use our time more wisely.   Also if you have ANY questions or concerns, please e-mail them to me in advance so I can be sure to have those answered for you (it might take a little research on my end).   You may choose to invite your child to the conference or you may just want an adults-only conference, I am comfortable with both formats so feel free to use the format that works best for you and your child.   If your child does not attend, you will have to do some goal setting with them at a different time.

I heard back from the majority of you about conference times.  Please keep those conference slips coming in so I have confirmation of the time that works for you.  I will send out a complete schedule on Monday when I've had a chance to see a few more of those slips.

I need to send a big SHOUT-OUT to Mr. Mac!  Ella's dad came on Friday and worked his magic on our computer.  The computer that hasn't worked for THREE long weeks is now back in business and better than ever!   I am sooooooooooo  excited!   Though the kids thought invisible writing was fun...it was driving me crazy!   So a huge, enormous, colossal,  humongous, tremendous, gigantic thank you (or as we like to say in Room 108, Merci) to Mr. Mac!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We learned a lot about pumpkins in our room last week.   We talk a lot about "schema" in our room.   I have noticed some of the kids saying the word in natural conversation these days (exciting!) so I thought I'd let you know what it means in our room.   We talk about how each reader brings something to the table when reading a book.   We don't come as a blank slate.   All the knowledge we bring to the book is called our "schema".  We like to think of it like a file folder.  So as a reader approaches a book, we look at the cover, we read the blurb on the back, we look at the author and we ask ourselves what we know about this book and subject already.  For example, we've been reading a lot about pumpkins.  So even before we read a new pumpkin book, we get out our file folder in our brain labelled pumpkins and look inside.  What do we already know about pumpkins?  What would you expect to be in a book about pumpkins? etc.   Then as we read we can check to see if we already knew that or do we have to add some information to our already established schema of pumpkins.

Why in the world do we take this step?   Research shows that new learning is best attached to previous learning.   It is good to determine what you already know and what you have learned and file it, if you will, in the same location.

Here is a great way for your child to share some of the pumpkin information with you!  I have subscribed to an AWESOME web site called Big Universe.   It is as if I've just added thousands of books to your home library!    Here is how to log in:

1.  Go to biguniverse.com

2.  To log in, you'll need three things:
username (your child's first name)
password:  northstar
group username:  carconjam

If you log-in, you'll see that I assigned the book "Pumpkins" to your child.   I encourage you to explore this book together and have your child show all that s/he has learned!   After you've finished that book, feel free to explore all this site has to offer.  I will assign books over the weekend that we've read in class.  I love making the home-school connection as strong as possible and I think this is one great way to do it!

As you may or may not know, the portal is not working again.  Next week, we will be getting new usernames and passwords as part of the new technology fix.   So I will again print out homework and send it your way.

Speaking of homework, we have had the MAJORITY of kids bringing it back on time.  However, not every one has...:(   Remember this is an important habit to establish as early on in the school career as possible.  Homework does not go away in the upper grades, in fact, students are required to do much more homework.  Please help your child get in the habit of homework early for great school success.   While there are not consequences yet for not bringing back homework (except for a poor homework grade), at the trimester's end, your child will be required to do lunch detention for not bringing back homework.

I must also applaud those students who are going ABOVE and BEYOND!   We had two kids bring their special Husky challenge books on Friday.  Big congrats to Anna and Austin!   They are researching such interesting things!

We also celebrated Emma's 7th birthday this week!  Happy Birthday to Emma!  We have another birthday coming up this week!!  I'm sending out an early birthday wish to the sweet Addi-B!   We will be celebrating both girls' birthdays on Friday.

Keep working on your pumpkin book character project.  If possible, send the book with the pumpkin and we will have a great display to show to all!

Next week, we turn our studies to spiders!   Get the cobwebs off those schema folders....ask yourself, "What do I already know about spiders?".

Have an AWESOME week!

Happy Sunday!

We are about to start Week 6 of First Grade.  I can hardly believe it!  We've had such a great start.  I know I say it a lot but I'm telling you this class is AH-MAH-ZING!!!  They are just so much fun!

Homework for this week:

Must-Dos:
*Practice Spelling Words (you can use this week's idea or last week's idea for practice).   Again I'm just trying to build a repertoire of ways to study so you can find the one that best fits your student!  The way I suggest this week is very good for visual learners.  By tracing around the word in straight lines, they will get a picture of the word shape in their head.
*DIBS  #2.  Remember this is a way to practice the concepts we work on during Concept Board.
*Sunshine Math- This math really encourages problem solving and thinking "outside the box".

May-Dos:
*Practice the Challenge Spelling Words
*Do any of the ABC tasks
*Work on the Husky Challenge

I will be sending home a fun pumpkin project tomorrow.  I hope your family enjoys it as much as I think you will...:)

Speaking of sending things home tomorrow, I will send home all your Friday papers home, too.   I can't believe I forgot to send out all the papers...including their darling photos...ughhh.   As soon as I got back from the buses, I realized what I had done.  Again, I apologize!!!!

If you are hanging onto a magazine order, TOMORROW is the absolutely LAST day to send it in.  If each child sells one magazine, our class gets $5 per child!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I don't think we can reach that goal but I thought I'd put it out there in case someone is intrigued by that possibility!

Also, I'd like to thank all our parent volunteers!  I'm telling you Reading Rainbow Rotations go so smoothly with another adult in the room.   The kids get an opportunity to practice their sight words and get one-on-one instruction.  It's priceless!!   So, thank you SO much!  If you are ever looking for something to do on Mondays-Thursdays from 9:30-10:20, our room is buzzing with activity and can always use extra parents!

Thank you for all of you in the fingerprint process.  I'm assuming that you are all in the process...if not, let me know.

Oh...last big thanks to our art moms!  I didn't thank Lindsey Burnett properly for the awesome Mona Lisa project.   We received many compliments about how amazing the artists in Room 108 are!   On Friday, our other awesome art mom, Brandi Smith, had the students draw beautiful birds and paint them.   We learned that Leonardo da Vinci LOVED nature!  In fact, he used to buy caged birds just so he could set them free.  If you are walking in the hall, be sure to check out our awesome art work!

The conference schedule is going around now.  We are trying to schedule sibling groups together.   I am back to back scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00-8:30.   I will send out the schedule as soon as I can!!   I can't wait to meet with you October 26th and 27th.

Have a great week!

OVER A 1,000!!!

Okay...I just realized what  geek I am!  I opened up our blog to post and saw over one thousand page hits and yelled, "YAY!"  which wouldn't be bad except for the fact that it's really early in the morning and I woke up a few of my family members...:)   Oh, well...I've been waiting for this day!!   Thank you all so much for reading our blog.   My goal is to always keep you informed about the happenings in Room 108!

So...the word on the street is that your portal log-ins should work now (not Power School yet...just portals!).  I tried Emma's with success.  Please try your student's log-in and let me know.  I'd like to post next week's homework on the portal rather than running it off at school.

I also wanted to share that we received our first postcard from an amazing exchange that I signed up for this summer.   Our class is the Idaho representative in the exchange.   We will be sending out postcards to first grades in all 50 states and we will be receiving postcards from all 50 states!!   Our first postcard was from Illinois.   To which Samay said, "Springfield is in Illinois.   That's where Abraham Lincoln lived!"  Wow, what a smart guy!   I love when the students can make connections to each state.   Last year, I challenged the students to memorize all 50 states which the majority of the students did...in alphabetical order!!   I'm upping the challenge this year.  We are going to attempt to learn to draw the United States by memory.  I've read a lot about it being done with students in 3rd grade on up but I believe this class is capable of doing it!   I think it's very important to instill a love of geography in the early years.   Kids this age are fascinated with maps!   They also soak information like sponges so it's a key time to get as much information in their growing brains as possible.   If your child went to a Montessori preschool, you probably know that they teach maps to preschool age children if they show the desire to learn them (which the majority of them do!).

In order to make our postcard exchange a success. . .we need some postcards!  If everyone would be willing to send in 2-3, we would have a great selection!  Please send in the postcards in the next week.  We are supposed to have them all mailed out by the end of this month...and it's coming faster than I imagined.

This week was filled with a lot of learning about Christopher Columbus.  We read stories about his life and watched a few videos about him and the voyage.   Yesterday, we read the book by Jane Yolen called "Encounter".   Wow, it sure helped the students realize there is two sides to every story.  The poignant fact at the end we learned is that when Columbus arrived on the islands now known as the Bahamas, he encountered the "Taino" people.   At that time, there were 300,000 Taino people and fifty years later only 500 Taino people were alive.     As I was looking for a image of the book cover, I also found a youtube video that gives a great summary of the book

Here is the link to the video:

They have extended the date for the $35 elementary fee until the end of next week.  If you have not paid and can send in the fee, it is much appreciated!  Our classroom directly benefits from the elementary fee.   Thank you!

Have a great weekend!

Vacation's over...back to work!!

Can you believe I left you alone for over a week?  I was tempted to write but I held back and let you enjoy your week!    I hope you are ready to hit the road running tomorrow!

So remember back to all my musings about homework?  My basic premise is that I want to make it as much of a custom-fit for your child as possible.  I know it won't be perfect (it can't be...I've learned that lesson).

So here is my solution:  Each week, your child will have a list of "must-dos" and a list of "may-dos".   You can customize it each week for your child, your schedule, your sanity...:)   If you have a go-getter, there is PLENTY to do.  If you have a child who just needs to learn a routine and isn't a big fan of homework, just do the "must-dos".  If you are finding the must-dos to be too difficult, please let me know and we can try to customize it even further.

So for this week (October 10-14) these are the MUST-DOs:

*Read every night.  Great habit!!  Keep track of books that you read on your slips so you can work on your 100 Book Challenge.

*Practice Mad Minute.  Keep challenging yourself!

*Spelling Word Practice.   You have 10 words to practice (15, if you want a challenge).  I provided one way to practice but you may find other ways to practice, too.

*Math Homework.  You have one Drops In A Bucket  (DIBS) page.   This is a great place to practice all the skills we work on during Math Concept Board.   You also have Sunshine Math pages.   These problems ask you to stretch your math thinking.   You will notice stars by each problem.  Those indicate the difficulty.  Give them all a try!

The MAY-DOS are:

*Character Education Choice Homework.  You get to answer questions about our character trait of the month, honesty.

*ABC Club Homework.   There are 12 fun task cards for the month.  You can try to tackle one or more this week.

*Husky Challenge.   This is a year-long challenge that will ask you to undertake some pretty heavy duty research skills.  This, like all of the above mentioned homework, is completely OPTIONAL.

Always keep in mind that if you choose NOT to do the MAY-DOS it will not in any way affect your homework grade.   These options are just for those of you who love the challenge!

You will find all the homework on the portal under my class site under Documents.   You will need to print all the items out each week.

I have had a woefully un-technical break because my computer decided to take a vacation along with the rest of us.   I am hoping the tech team has it up and running on Monday morning.   I'm feeling a bit behind the eight ball with planning but hope to get all caught up tomorrow.

I have done some serious tweaking to our schedule.   Here is a more updated version of our days on Mondays through Thursdays.  Fridays are always very different due to read-aloud, testing, art, and other fun stuff!

9:00-9:15  Mad Minute Practice and Testing
9:15-9:30  Morning Meeting
9:30-10:20  Reading Rainbow Rotations (this is where we will be using parent volunteers to assist at a station!  We are so excited to be starting that this week!)
10:20-10:45   Bathroom and Recess Break
10:45-11:10  Chapter Book Read-Aloud (great vocabulary development) and Quote Writing
11:10-11:45  Math Concept Board
11:45-12:15  Book Basket Time  (students read from books and do projects relating to them, students meet in small skill groups to work on phonetic skills,  sight words, etc.)
12:15-1:00  Lunch and Lunch Recess
1:00-1:30  Math Strategy Practice, Math Talk, Origo Math (we are probably going to do fewer worksheets but work on the skills in a direct instruction manner)
1:30-1:50  Language Board/ Shurley Grammar
1:50-2:30  Theme/ Enrichment  (we will be studying our social studies and/or science themes during this time and also doing enrichment activities in geography, vocabulary, French, music, physical fitness, etc.)
2:30-3:15  Special Classes (Music, P.E., Computer, Library)
3:15-3:30   Clean-up and Wonderopolis

Boy, we like to pack a lot of fun and learning into our days!  I hope your child is finding the groove of first grade and is beginning to find the joy in all-day school!

Have a great week!
